In recent years, the Guild of Volunteer Millers, the Association of De Hollandsche Molen, the Craftsman Corn Millers' Guild and the Gild Fryske Mounders have worked to get the miller's craft on the list of intangible cultural heritage. In December 2017, this office was placed on the list of Intangible World Heritage by UNESCO(link): a great success! Since the nineteenth century, many mills have come to a standstill. When the mills were shut down, the knowledge of working with mills was also lost. The miller's craft was in danger of dying out. Nowadays, fifty professional millers and hundreds of volunteer millers keep the wind- and water mills in the Netherlands running again. A training course for volunteer millers has been set up. The volunteers are also committed to sharing knowledge about the miller's craft with the general public, such as through the organization of National Mill Day. Minister of Culture Ingrid van Engelshoven: “Intangible heritage can only continue to exist if it develops with the times. That is exactly what the millers in the Netherlands are doing. They have great plans for the future. It is fantastic that Dutch intangible heritage has been included on this list for the first time. Being a miller is a beautiful craft that is thoroughly intertwined with the Netherlands.”
