Want to become a miller?

There are approximately 1,100 windmills in the Netherlands, which must run regularly to prevent decay. Fortunately, there are currently enough millers to occupy these mills. But the miller population is affected by an aging population, the average age is over 60 years. Supplementation of the file is desirable.

At Molen De Lelie you are welcome as an apprentice miller if you are healthy in body and mind and motivated. You must be in good physical condition and not afraid of heights. We have a very experienced instructor and four millers.

There is a strong team feeling among volunteers and millers at Molen De Lelie and we want to convey that.

The training of the “youngest” group of millers lasted more than three years. During these three years you will learn all facets of being a miller at our mill: technology, the weather, milling wheat and spelt, maintenance and last but not least independence. Working with a mill means looking, listening and smelling, a mill must fit you like a jacket. With theory you lay the foundation, with practice you gain insight into working with a mill.

To complete the training phase, two exams must be taken, the Guild exam first (entrance exam), followed by the exam of “De Hollandsche Molen”. There is approximately six months between these two exams. You are insured during the training phase. After successfully completing these exams, you can run any windmill in the Netherlands (with the exception of Friesland) "for the prince".

Anyone who has become interested and curious by reading this piece has the opportunity to orientate themselves around the mill.

This can be done on Saturday afternoon from 12 noon to 4 p.m. or contact us by email.

For more detailed information about the training, you can visit the website of De Hollandsche Molen and the Guild of Volunteer Millers.

Want to become a volunteer?

Volunteers are always welcome, many hands make light work. You then have to think about manning the store (Saturday and Wednesday afternoon) or preparing products from the store. We are also looking for a mill guide. We open the terrace at major port events, any help is welcome. Interested? Contact us via email or come and have a look on Saturday or Wednesday afternoon!
